Private Walter Cunningham, 1st/4th (Border) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in Palestine, aged 25, on the 19th April 1917 during the Second Battle of Gaza. He had been born in Hawick and was the son of Walter and Elizabeth Cunningham of 61 Lintburn Street, Galashiels. He is commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel. he had been a member of the territorial 4th K.O.S.B. and was mobilised with the Battalion in August 1914. He served at Gallipoli where he was wounded during the “Charge” on 12th July 1915 and upon recovery then served in Egypt and Palestine. He fell during the attack on “Outpost Hill” which cost the Battalion 213 casualties. The photos show the Borderers in Palestine in 1917. ( His brother Arthur also fell during the War – see above ).
