Private Robert Barrie

Private Robert Johnston Barrie, 1st/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in Palestine, aged 34, on the 8th November 1917. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of the late John and Margaret Barrie of 29 Stirling Street, Galashiels. He had joined the 7th Battalion in France in December 1915 and then had served in the 7th/8th K.O.S.B. He was wounded in action and upon recovery was posted to the 1st/5th Battalion in Egypt in early 1917. He then went on to serve in Palestine. He fell in the attack on the Turkish positions on “Sausage Ridge” where casualties were 12 Other Ranks killed and 80 wounded. In addition a further 7 Other Ranks were posted missing. He is buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine, Israel where his Headstone is inscribed “Gone But Not Forgotten”.
