Lance Corporal Peter Campbell, 1st/7th (Territorial) Battalion, Royal Scots. He died on Service, aged 20, on the 22nd May 1915 in the Quintinshill Railway disaster. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of Peter and Agnes Campbell of Halliburton Place, Galashiels and 89 Albert Street, Edinburgh. He had been a Territorial in the Royal Scots and was mobilised with his Battalion, which was based in Leith, in August 1914. He is buried in Rosebank Cemetery, Leith, Edinburgh where the names are commemorated on a wall behind a Memorial Cross. The troops from “A” and “D” Companies were en route to Liverpool to embark for the Gallipoli campaign where they were involved in the rail disaster at Quintinshill near Gretna. 210men were killed and a further 224 injured in the worst disaster in British rail history. The survivors returned to Leith but were later sent to Gallipoli, The photos were taken at the scene.
