Private James Church, 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders. He was killed in action in France, aged 25 on the 28th September 1915 during the Battle of Loos. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of the late Adam and Helen Church formerly of Church Street, Galashiels. He had served his apprenticeship in his father’s drapery business in the High Street and after his father died he carried on in business with his brother George. He enlisted in November 1914 and joined his battalion in France in February 1915. He is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Dud Corner, Loos, France. The first photo shows the Highlanders marching up to the line at Loos and the second shows the village of Loos after its capture by Scottish troops.
