Private Andrew Cunningham, 7thy (Service) Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. He was killed in action in Belgium, aged 19, on the 14th October 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres. He had been born in Galashiels and was the youngest son of Francis and the late Charlotte Cunningham of 33 Overhaugh Street, Galashiels. His seven brothers also served during the War and all survived. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial, Zonnebeke, Flanders, Belgium. The photos try to show the atrocious conditions of the battlefield where the incessant shelling had destroyed the fragile Flanders drainage systems and allowed much of the ground to be flooded.
