Lance Corporal Lawson Brown, 1st Battalion Seaforth Highlanders. He was killed in action in France, aged 22, on the 9th May 1915 during the Battle of Aubers Ridge. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of George and Agnes Brown of Halliburton Place, Galashiels and is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France. He was a Regular soldier and was stationed in India on the outbreak of the War. The Battalion as part of the Meerut Division landed in France in October 1914. The Battalion suffered 509 casualties in the Battle and due to a weak bombardment which failed to suppress the defenders and destroy the barbed wire entanglements saw over 11,000 casualties for no gain whatsoever. ( His brother Thomas also fell during the War – see below). The photos show troops at Aubers Ridge.
