Lance Corporal John Cochrane, 9th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps. He was killed in action in France, aged 40, on the 14th June 1918 and is buried in Caestre Military Cemetery, France. He had been born in Gordon, Berwickshire and was the son of John and the late Jane Cochrane of Galashiels and the husband of Robina Cochrane whom he married in Galashiels in 1899. He had been a van driver in Galashiels when he enlisted in the Army Service Corps but was posted to the M.G.C. in France. The M.G.C. used the Vickers Mk2 water cooled gun in both defensive and offensive roles. His Headstone is inscribed “Greater Love Hath No Man Than This”.
