Lance Corporal Henry Smith, 9th ( Service ) Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. He was killed in action on 10th July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Thiepval, France. He had been born in Felton, Northumberland and had enlisted in Berwick. He fell in action during the attack on Trones Wood which was eventually cleared after very heavy fighting. 9th Seaforths were the pioneer Battalion for the 9th ( Scottish ) Division. The artists impression shows the type of grim fighting that took place in and around the Somme woods such as Trones and the photograph shows a group of Seaforths checking a German dugout in a recently captured trench.
