Private Richard Armstrong

Private Richard Armstrong, 20th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers ( 1st Tyneside Scottish ). He was killed in France, aged 24, on 30th January 1916 whilst on sentry duty and is buried in “Y” Farm Military Cemetery, Bois Grenier, France.  He had been born in Eyemouth and was the son of the late Richard and Jane Armstrong of High Street, Eyemouth.  He had been employed at the Grange Villa Colliery in County Durham when he enlisted.  He had only been in France for a few weeks when he was killed.  His brother John also fell – see above ). The 20th together with its sister Battalions 21st, 22nd and 23rd formed the 102nd Tyneside Scottish Brigade as part of the 34th Division. His sister Mrs James Swiney lost her husband at sea on the same day she received the telegram from the War Office. ( see under James Swiney )
