Cadet Joseph Purves

Cadet Joseph Purves, Merchant Navy. He was lost aboard the S.S.”Benvorlich” on 19th March 1941 aged 18. He had been born in Eyemouth and was the son of Robert and Catherine Cormack Purves of 18 Church Street, Eyemouth and is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial. “Benvorlich”, was built by Charles Connell & Co. Ltd. of Scotstoun, Glasgow for Ben Line Steamers and was launched in 1919. She sunk by air attack West of Malin Head, County Donegal, Ireland sailing in convoy from Middlesborough to the Far East. 20 of her crew were lost. Apart from the Officers all the crew were Chinese and they are commemorated on the Hong Kong Memorial.
