Lance Corporal Archibald Stebbing

Lance Corporal Archibald Chisholm Stebbing, 4th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action on 4th April 1945 in Germany aged 27. He had been born in Ayton and was the son of John Scott Stebbing and Jane Ann Stebbing of Ayton and is buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany. He fell in the attack on the Teutoburger Wald south of Bremen where the opposition were fanatical cadets from a nearby S.S. Battle School. The enemy were ejected from their positions but 51 casualties were suffered with 23 being fatal. (This was the area where the Roman General Varus suffered a catastrophic defeat by Germanic tribes in 9 A.D.) The photographs show  Borderers in Germany in 1945.
