Corporal Alexander Windram

Corporal Alexander Aitchison Windram, 7th ( British Columbia ) Battalion. Canadian Infantry Forces. He was killed in action in France on 9th April 1917 on the first day of the  Battle of Arras, aged 38. He had been born in Eyemouth and was the son of Margaret and the late John Windram of St. Ella’s Place, Eyemouth and the husband of Mary Fraser Mills Windram of British Columbia and is buried in Arras Road Cemetery Roqlincourt, Arras, France.  He had worked in the fishing industry before emigrating to Canada in 1910 and worked there as a steam fitter at Fraser’s Mills, New Westminster, British Columbia. He was a member of the local militia and enlisted in February 1916 landing in France in November 1916. His Headstone is inscribed” Gone From Our Sight To Memory Dear. Inserted By His Loving Wife & Family”. The photographs show troops during the Battle.
