Flying Officer Alexander Swanston Aitchison, Bsc. ( Edin ), Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was a pilot with 247 ( China British ) Squadron Royal Air Force and was lost on an Air Operation on 14th February 1944 aged 22. He was the son of Alexander and Alice Aitchison of Eyemouth and is buried in Orleans Main Cemetery, France. The Squadron flew the Hawker Typhoon in the ground attack role from R.A.F. Merston. In the run up to D Day the main targets being transport systems and weapon emplacements. His Headstone is inscribed ” How Bright These Glorious Spirits Shine “.
