Private William Young

Private William Young , 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders. He died on Active Service in France, aged 24 on the 14th April 1915. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of Roderick and the late Margaret Young of Galashiels.  Before enlisting in November 1914 he had worked as an insurance agent in the Allanton/Edrom area. He joined his Battalion in France in February 1915 but became ill and died from “spotted fever” ( spinal meningitis ) in the 10th Stationary Hospital in St. Omer. He is buried in Longuenesse ( St Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, France where his Headstone is inscribed ” Until The Day Dawn” . His brother Alexander also fell . It is unknown why the Memorial lists his Regiment as the Kings Own Scottish Borderers.
