Bombardier Thomas Jeffrey

Bombardier Thomas Jeffrey, “D” Battery, 315th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He died on Service on 12th November 1918 of wounds received in action aged 27. He had been born at Ninewells Mill and was the son of May Jeffrey and the husband of Isabella Jeffrey of Stuarts Law, Edrom, Berwickshire.  Before enlisting he had been employed as a carter at Ninewells Mill, Edrom. He is buried in Edrom Churchyard, Edrom, Berwickshire.  He had been home on leave when he contracted influenza and died at his home at Stuartslaw, Edrom. ( At this time the ” Spanish Flu” epidemic was sweeping the World ). The standard artillery piece used by the Field Artillery was the 18 Pounder Field Gun ( the weight of the shell was 18 pounds) and was normally used in an anti infantry role using both high explosive and shrapnel shells as shown below.
