Private John Blacklock, 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. He was killed in action in France on 13th November 1916 during the Battle of the Ancre where the 3rd Division ,of which the Battalion was part ,supported the 51st (Highland) Division’s highly successful attack on the very strong German positions in the village of Beaumont Hamel. ( This village was a first day objective on 1st July ).This was the last major Battle of the Somme Offensive. He is buried in Queens Cemetery Pusieux, Somme, France. By this time the autumnal rains had turned the battlefield into a glutinous quagmire as can be seen in the photographs. The Colour image shows a peaceful Somme landscape today with ” no gas, no barbed wire, no guns firing now”.
