Private Alexander Mitchell, 1st Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action in Flanders on 3rd January 1915, aged 30. He was a Regular soldier and was the son of Grace and the late James Mitchell of Kelloe Mains Edrom, Duns. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.( He is not commemorated on the Edrom War Memorial). At this time the Battalion were holding trenches in the Kemmel sector and were not involved in any offensive or defensive actions. Casualties, however, were suffered from sniping and the occasional shell.
