Private James Fairgrieve

Private James Henry Fairgrieve, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died of wounds at Gallipoli on 18th June 1915, aged 32 and is buried in Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey. He was the son of the late James and Margaret Fairgrieve of Ferniehill Cottage, Kelso. He was mortally wounded by a stray shell before the Battalion had even reached the firing line and he was the Battalion’s first fatality of the campaign. The battalion had left Liverpool on 23rd May on H.M.T. ” Empress Of Britain ” and landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula on the 13th June 1915 with the rest of the 52nd ( Lowland ) Division of which it was part.
