Flying Officer Thomas Wood

Flying Officer Thomas Wood,  418 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force. He was lost with his pilot Flight Lieutenant Hugh Glassco on Operations over Germany on 5th January 1945 aged 22 and is buried in Rheinberg War Cemetery, Germany. His Squadron flew the superb De Havilland Mosquito and were specialists in “train busting”. He had been born in Leitholm and was the son of Andrew and Annie Wood of East End, Leitholm and had been educated at the Berwickshire High School. After leaving school he trained to become a Surveyor for Messrs Wimpey. He was commissioned from Leading aircraftman in April 1944 and promoted in October 1944.  He is also commemorated on the Leitholm War Memorial and the Commemorative plaque in the Berwickshire High School. ( 418 Squadron was part of the Royal Canadian Air Force under R.A.F. Operational Command and specialised in close support work ).
