Private Robert Coulter

Private Robert Coulter, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was died of wounds on 19th April 1917 received in in the attack on” Outpost Hill” during the Second Battle of Gaza and is buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Gaza. The Battalion suffered heavy losses with 6 Officers and 43 Other Ranks killed and 9 Officers and 155 other ranks wounded.  Lieutenant Elder of Coldstream was one of the wounded Officers. The Turkish Redoubt on the Hill was captured in the attack gallantly led by Major Wattie Forrest of Kelso but fierce Turkish counter attacks and a shortage of men and ammunition forced a retirement back to British lines. Major Forrest was mortally wounded on the parapet of the Redoubt. The photos show the Borderers in Palestine.
