Private George Baird, 5th ( Dumfries and Galloway ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in Belgium on 4th November 1944, aged 24. He was the son of Andrew and Elizabeth Baird and the nephew of Mary A. Baird of Berwick-upon-Tweed and is buried in Bergen-op-Zoom War Cemetery. He fell in the fighting to clear Walcheren so as to allow the port of Antwerp to be used again to supply the advancing allied armies. 5th K.O.S.B. suffered 62 casualties of whom 9 were killed.
