Private John Young

Private John Fraser Young, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died  on 26th June 1918, aged 20. He was the son of William and Margaret Young of Station Road, Earlston and is buried in Earlston Churchyard where his Headstone is inscribed ” Nearer My God To Thee”. He had been a millworker and had joined the Territorial K.O.S.B. in January 1914. He joined the Battalion in Egypt in September 1916 and thence to Palestine where he was seriously wounded on the 17th April 1917 on the attack on the Turkish positions on ” Outpost Hill” during the second Battle of Gaza. He was evacuated to hospital in Alexandria and eventually invalided home to be discharged from the Army in March 1918. He died from his wounds in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
