Sergeant John Turner Johnston, Air Gunner, Royal Air Force. ( The C.W.G.C. site shows his rank as Aircraftsman 2nd Class , Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve ). He died on active servive in South Africa on 12th April 1943, aged 19. He was the son of John and Janet Johnston of Earlston and is buried in Capetown, ( Maitland ) Cemetery. Flying training was conducted near here under the Empire Flying Training Scheme and it maybe that he died in a flying accident as this cemetery was used for the casualties of such accidents.
