Sergeant William Wilkinson

Sergeant Air Gunner, William Middlemiss Wilkinson, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was lost on Air Operations with 192 Squadron, Royal Air Force on 23 February 1945, aged 19. He had been born in Duns and was the son of William and Mary Middlemiss Wilkinson of Duns and is buried in Durnbach War Cemetery, Germany. His Headstone is inscribed ” Christ Shall Clasp That Broken Chain Closer When We Meet Again “. He had been a member of the Duns air Training Corps.  He was lost on a Operation to Pforzheim when his aircraft was shot down by a night fighter near Stuttgart. The Squadron had been formed in January 1943 to operate in the radar counter measure role. It was based at RAF Foulsham and worked with 100 Group flying the De Havilland Mosquito and the Handley Page Halifax  The aircraft flew with the bomber streams and used electronic measures to confuse the German radars. ( As his role was Air Gunner it is likely he was flying in a Halifax rather rather than a Mosquito which had no role for a gunner ).
