Gunner William Robert McLean, 57th ( 1st/5th Battalion, The East Surrey Regiment ) Anti Tank Regiment. He was killed in action in Italy, aged 33, on 16th February 1944 during the fighting for the Anzio beachhead. He had been born in Lauder and was the son of Alexander and Margaret McLean of Channelkirk, Lauder, the husband of Agnes McLean of Earlsmeadow, Duns and is buried in the Anzio War Cemetery, Anzio, Italy. Before the War he had worked locally as a bricklayer. His Headstone is inscribed ” Too Dearly Loved To Be Forgotten By His Sorrowing Wife And Son “.
