Private William Hardie

Private William Hardie, 10th ( Service ) Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was killed in action in France on 25th September 1915 on the first day of the Battle of Loos, aged 24. He was the son of Mrs Isabella Nichol of Broomhouse Cottage, Duns and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Dud Corner, Loos, France. The first photo shows an actual assault with the troops disappearing into the ghostly clouds of gas and smoke and the second shows the village of Loos after capture. This day was the first time the British Army had used gas in the War. The artist’s illustration depicts a Battalion attack at Loos led by their pipers.
