Private William Hardie, 10th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was killed in action in France on 25th September 1915 on the first day of the Battle of Loos, aged 24. He was the son of Mrs Isabella Nichol of Broomhouse Cottage, Duns and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Dud Corner, Loos, France. The first photo shows an actual assault with the troops disappearing into the clouds of gas and smoke and the second shows part of the Loos battlefield looking towards the German front lines where shells are bursting.
