Private Joseph Hastie Dunlop, 2nd Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in France on 9th May 1917 during the Battle of Arras, aged 19. He had been born in Duns and was the son of William and Isabella Dunlop of Easter Street, Duns and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. Before enlisting he was a porter at Duns station and had already been wounded in November 1916. On that day the Battalion were holding trenches between Fresnoy Wood and the village of Oppy and for two days had to suffer a very heavy German bombardment. Casualties were 1 Officer and 20 Other Ranks killed with 1 Officer and 158 Other Ranks wounded. The photos show Oppy Wood during the Battle.
