Private John Patterson, 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. He was killed in action in France, aged 22, on 17th June 1917 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Arras, France. He was a native of Duns and his rank is given as Sergeant in the C.W.G.C. site. He was the son of John and Christina Patterson of Bonkyl and Windywalls, Sprouston. He had been a railway platelayer when he enlisted as a Regular in August 1914. He fell in an attack on the German positions on ” Infantry Hill” which captured the position and took 150 prisoners. Three counter attacks were fought off and the Battalion was relieved on the 18th June having suffered 6 Officers and 64 Other Ranks killed and 4 Officers and 158 Other Ranks wounded. In addition 27 Other Ranks were posted missing. Most of the casualties were caused by artillery fire as were the majority of casualties throughout the War.
