Private Edward O’Brien

Private Edward O’Brien, 6th ( Pioneer ) Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment.  He died at Home on the 14th August 1917, aged 34. He had been born in Duns in 1883 and was the son of Edward and Bridget O’Brien of Clockmill, Duns. and the husband of Julia O’Brien of Rock Cottage, Bedlington, Northumberland. He had been educated at the Berwickshire High School before serving his apprenticeship in Duns as a joiner and had been in the National Reserve having served in both the Kings own Scottish Borderers and the Royal Scots. He had worked in Wales and then Hull  where he enlisted in the East Yorks in September 1914. He had then served at Gallipoli in the landings at Suvla Bay in August 1915 but became ill and was evacuated to Malta then home.  In March 1916 he was discharged from the Army and was awarded the Silver War Badge. He is buried in Hull Northern cemetery. His brother Patrick also fell- see above.
