Private Alexander Nichol

Private Alexander Nichol, 11th ( Service ) Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was killed in action in France on 15th September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme, aged 19. He had been born in Duns and was the son of Annie Nichol of Broom House, Duns and was the grandson of Mr A Nichol of 9 North Street, Duns  and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing, Thiepval, France.  Before enlisting ( underage ) in September 1914 he had worked as a butcher with Mr Simpson of Easter Street, Duns. The photographs show Scottish troops on the Somme and the colour image shows a peaceful Somme landscape today with ” no gas, no barbed wire, no guns firing now”.
