Able Seaman John Palmer

Able Seaman John Ormiston Palmer, Hawke Battalion, Royal Naval Division. He died at Gallipoli on 26th November 1915, aged 21 and was buried at sea. He was the son of John and Agnes Palmer of South Doddington, Wooler and is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Chatham, Kent. He had been born at Langham Toll, Mindrum, Northumberland. The Division was comprised mostly of those members of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines who were surplus to requirement in the Fleet and were formed into battalions named after famous British seamen. ( Members of the Division kept their naval ranks). Eventually the Division was moved to the Western Front and renamed the 63rd( Royal Naval ) Division where it remained until the Armistice.
