Private Thomas Crawford, 2nd Battalion, Canadian Infantry. He was killed in action in France on 9th September 1916, aged 19, during the Battle of the Somme. He was the son of Robert and Annie Crawford of Hassendean, Hawick and is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial, France. He was the second son of Private R. Crawford, Denholm of the Army Veterinary Corps. The photograph shows a recently capture trench on the Somme with the chalk soil of the Region very evident.
