Gunner George Storie, “Z”, 20th Trench Mortar Battery, Royal Field Artillery. He was killed in action, aged 20, in France on 12th November 1917 and is buried in Fins New British Cemetery, Sorel-Le-Grand, Somme, France. He was the son of Thomas Storie of Todlaw, Cavers and before enlisting he was chauffeur to Mr Anderson of Bonchester. The photograph shows a gun Battery in action. The autumn rains turned the Somme chalky ground into a glutinous quagmire which made movement difficult for men and guns as shown below. The final photo shows a heavy trench mortar in action.
