Sapper James Shiel

Sapper James Shiel, Royal Engineers. He died at home from tuberculosis in Darnick on 14th May 1920 aged 38. He had been born in Melrose to Susan and the late William Shiel of Darnick and is buried in Melrose Abbey Churchyard. Before enlisting in March 1916 he had been employed as a stonemason. He became ill with T.B. after going overseas and was evacuated back home and was discharged from the Army in December 1917.
