Private Thomas Allan

Private Thomas Allan, 1st/8th ( Service ) Battalion, Black Watch. He was killed in France on 16th December 1917, aged, 27 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Thiepval, France. He had been born in Melrose and was the son of Andrew and Agnes Allan of Darnick. Before enlisting he had been employed as a gardener in Killin, Perthshire. (This area was a recruiting ground for the Black Watch ). On 16th December his Battalion was holding front, support and reserve trenches near Gouzeaucourt in the Somme sector of the Front.
