Private William Swan

Private William Swan, 1st/6th ( Service ) Battalion, Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He was died in Belgium on 24th August 1917 of wounds received in action during the Third Battle of Ypres. He was the son of Francis and Martha Swan of New Harperridge, Cornhill-on-Tweed and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Flanders, Belgium. He is also commemorated on his parents headstone in Cornhill Churchyard. The photos show troops during the early stages of the Battle before the incessant shelling destroyed the Flanders drainage systems.

Commentary

William Swan was a Salmon Fisherman on the Tweed at Twizell Boat House he lived at Twizell Stead . His mother lived at Harper Ridge near Donaldsons Lodge.
