Private John Smith

Private John Smith, 51st Battalion, Machine Gun Corps ( Infantry ). He was killed in action in France on 20th July 1916 aged 24 during the Battle of the Somme. He was born in Coldstream and was the son of William and Mary Smith of 5 Heriot Mount, Edinburgh. He is buried in Marfaux British Cemetery, Marne, France and his Headstone is inscribed ” God Is Love “. As He was born in Coldstream we felt he should be included here and that his name should be inscribed on the Coldstream War Memorial. The M.G.C. used the Vickers Mk1 water cooled gun in both defensive and offensive roles. The photograph shows gunners on the Somme.
