Chief Steward William Gray

Chief Steward William Matthew Gray, Merchant Navy, He died at sea  on 28th June 1941, aged 50. He had been born in Coldstream and was the son of the William Gray and Isabella Gray of “Cheviot View”, High Street, Coldstream ( His father for 52 years was the secretary of Coldstream Burns Club . He served from 1888 till 1939 making him the longest serving secretary of that August organisation ). He had been employed by the Coldstream Brewery and had worked in Perth before joining the Merchant Navy. He died from heatstroke aboard the S.S. “Mudanya” as it was passing through the Red Sea. He was buried at sea.
