Private Thomas Reid

Private Thomas Reid, 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, He was killed in action in France on 21st July 1916 ,aged 23, during the Battle of the Somme and is buried in Mericourt L Abbe Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme France. He was the son of Helen Reid of Somerset House, Chirnside. He had been born at Nisbet Hill near Duns, and was the son of Peter and Helen Reid of Hawkslaw, Coldstream and Somerset House, Chirnside. Before enlisting in October 1915 he had been employed at Whiteburn farm, Grantshouse, joining his Battalion in France in May 1916. The photographs show Scottish troops on the Somme.. His Headstone is inscribed ” To Memory Ever Dear “. The colour photo shows part of the peaceful Somme landscape today.
