Driver Robert Kerr

Driver Robert McLaren Kerr, Royal Army Service Corps, attached to the 175th Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps. He was killed in action near Coleville-sur Orne in France, aged 39, on 26th June 1944 during the fighting in Normandy and is buried in La Deliverande War Cemetery, Normandy France. He was the son of  the late John and Elizabeth Kerr and had been born in 1905 at Kelloe Mains near Edrom. He was married to Margaret Kerr of The Crooks, Hirsel, Coldstream whom he had married in Edrom in 1934. Before the War he had been employed by the Earl of Home at the Hirsel, Coldstream. His Unit was part of the 51st ( Highland ) Division and had landed in Normandy on the afternoon of the 6th June. He is also commemorated on the Edrom War Memorial where his name has been added only recently. The photos show British troops in Normandy. in June 1944.
