Private George Taylor

Private George Taylor , 6th/7th ( Service ) Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. He was killed in action during the Battle of the Somme on 15th September 1916, aged 25, and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. He fell in the attack and capture of the heavily fortified village of Martinpuich. 6th/7th Royal Scots Fusiliers were part of the 15th ( Scottish ) Division. He had been born in Aberlady and was the son of George and Isabella Taylor  of Tweed Mill, Coldstream. His brother John died in Germany in January 1919. ( see above ). Martinpuich which was taken within two hours of the attack beginning without heavy casualties.  Most of the casualties occurred when the assault troops pressed too close too the British barrage ( “friendly” fire ). The photographs show Scottish troops on the Somme and the colour photo shows the peaceful Somme landscape today with ” no gas, no barbed wire, no guns firing now”
