Flying Officer Ian Currie

Flying Officer Ian Riach Currie, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 261 Squadron. He died on Active Service on Malta on 30th January 1941, aged 20. He had been born in India and was the son of James Henderson  and Marie L. H. Currie of Ruthven, Coldstream and Edinburgh and is buried in Malta ( Capuccini ) Naval Cemetery. 261 Squadron flew the Hawker Hurricane Mk 1 in the defence of Malta during the long siege of that Island by German and Italian Forces. At one stage Malta was the most bombed place on Earth. His Headstone is inscribed ” Till Once Again O’er Greener Hills We Ride Together You And I “. He died in hospital on Malta from cerebral malaria contracted whilst serving at Takoradi on the Gold Coast ( Ghana ).
