Sergeant Andrew Gray

Sergeant Andrew Tait Gray, 2nd Battalion ,Cameronians . He was killed in action in Sicily on 2nd August 1943, aged 24. He had been born in Crailinghall, Oxnam, Roxburghshire and was the son of Adam and Elizabeth Gray of  ” Domino Cottage “, Duke Street, Coldstream and the husband of Rose Gray of Hamilton, Lanarkshire. He is buried in Catania War Cemetery, Sicily, Italy. His Headstone is inscribed ” God’s Greatest Gift, Remembrance, Sweet Jesus Have Mercy. R.I.P. His Loving Wife And Children”.  He was a Regular soldier and took part in the fighting in France in 1940 being evacuated from Dunkirk in June 1940. The Battalion were then sent to Madagascar then Persia and Iraq a month later. This was followed by the invasion of Sicily. The photographs show Allied troops in Sicily.
