Gunner William Johnston. Royal Artillery. He died on Active Service on 6th December 1944, aged 37, and is buried in Chirnside Parish Churchyard. He had been born in Chirnside and was the youngest son on Mrs Ellen and the late William Johnston of Crosshill, Chirnside. Before the War he was employed at the Chirnside Paper Mill. He was a noted footballer and played for Chirnside F.C. in the East Of Scotland League. As a full back he had won medals when winning the Upper Border League and the Conan Doyle cup. He left a widow Elizabeth Anne Dunlop ( nee Horsburgh ) and one child. His Headstone is inscribed ” Sleep On, Beloved, Till We Meet Again”. He had served in an Anti Aircraft Battery and as a despatch rider. and was killed in a road accident.
