Private William Hall

Private William Hall, “E” Coy. 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died on Service on 2nd October 1914 aged 36. He had been born in Edinburgh and was the son of Edward and Margaret Hall of Duns and the husband of Elizabeth Hall of West End, Chirnside and is buried in Duns Parish Churchyard. (  “E” Coy. was based at Coldstream with detachments at Ayton, Eyemouth, Chirnside, Swinton and Coldingham ).  He had enlisted as a Regular in the K.O.S.B. in 1896 and served in India until 1904 when he was discharged to the reserve. He then worked at the Chirnside paper mill and was a member of the Territorial K.O.S.B. He was mobilised with the battalion in August 1914 and were in training at Cambusbarron near Stirling when he collapsed and died.
