Private William Martin

Private William Smith Martin, 2nd Battalion, Cameronians. He was killed in action in Belgium, aged 22, on the 13th August 1917 during the Battle of Third Ypres. He had been born in Blackhope, Heriot and was the son of William and Margaret Martin of Middleton Home Farm, Borthwick, Heriot. In 1911 William was with his Family in Caddonfoot. Originally he enlisted in the Kings Own Scottish Borderers but was transferred to the Cameronians in France. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium. The photos show troops during the early stages of the Battle.
