Private John Burnett, 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. He was killed in action in France on 12th October 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and is buried in Warlencourt British Cemetery, nr. Bapaume, Somme, France. He had been born at Roberton, Roxburghshire and had enlisted in Galashiels. The Battalion had been raised as part of the “New Army” at Fort George in August 1914 and went to France in May 1915. They saw action at the Battle of Loos and the capture of Longueval on the Somme. The first photograph shows a group of Seaforths in a front line trench with one of their number using a trench periscope to observe the enemy lines and the second a group of Seaforths checking a capture German dugout and the third the roll call of Seaforths after a battle.
