Private James Scott, 4th Battalion Canadian Infantry ( 1st Central Ontario Regiment ). He was killed in action in France on 8th September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme, aged 19. He was the son of James and Margaret Scott of Laurel Cottage, Birgham and is buried in Sunken Road Cemetery, Contalmaison, Somme, France. His Headstone is inscribed ” Lovingly Remembered “. The photograph shows a typical Somme landscape with its chalky soil. The trench seems to have been pulverised by artillery before its capture and this ground would turn into a glutinous quagmire after the autumn rains making movement very difficult as can be seen from the photographs.
