Private Robert Bell

Private Robert Moffat Bell. 1st Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in Normandy in the fighing for Cambes Wood, on 12th June 1944, aged 28. He was the son of William and Isabella Bell of Birgham and the husband of Alice Elizabeth Bell of Glass, Aberdeenshire. He is buried in La Deliverande War Cemetery, Douvres, Normandy, France. He was the first man in Birgham to be called up into the Forces and the first man to become a casualty. Before joining the Army he had worked with Messrs Turnbull, timber merchants in Kelso. His Headstone is inscribed ” For Honour, Liberty And Truth He Sacrificed His Glorious Youth”
