Private William Millar

Private William Millar, 1st Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action at Gallipoli on 4th June 1915, aged 29. during the Third Battle of Krithia.  He was the son of the late John and Jessie Millar and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey. This battle was a general attack intended to cut the peninsula of Gallipoli in two and was preceded by a bombardment by the Pre-Dreadnought battleships ” Swiftsure ” and ” Vengeance “. Despite this the Turkish defences were too strong, no mans land was too wide and much of the wire was uncut. Courage was not enough and gains were paltry all along the whole 4,000 yard front of the attack. ( the ship pictured is H.M.S. Swiftsure ). The photograph shows the Battalion going over the top that morning.
